The principle of the 5 elements
The word "Ayurveda" comes from Sanskrit and means "science of life". This medicine focuses on people. The principle is that each of us is composed of different energies coming from the 5 basic elements: water, space, air, fire, and earth. These are present or not to varying degrees in each of us.
The Principle of 3 doshas
The combination of these different elements in each of us allows us to fall under one of the 3 categories of Ayurvedic medicine: these are the 3 doshas.
Vata: consists of elements of air and space
Pitta: determined by the association of fire and earth
Kapha: formed by the elements of water and earth.
Each person would have some of their own dosha within them. But these doshas are not static. They change throughout our lives and vary depending on the choices we make, our environment, our diet, diseases and many other factors.
The Ayurvedic doctor starts by asking his patient about their lifestyle. He will then examine their entire body to make a diagnosis.
According to this medicine, if we become ill, it would be due to an imbalance of one of the doshas in its basic constitution. Ayurveda is not only interested in symptoms, but also in the person as a whole. His goal is to balance and harmonize the person at the level of his body, mind and soul.
